Key Terms
Gastrointestinal system tubes 胃肠系统导管 – These tubes are inserted from the nose to the stomach for tube feeding 管饲 (foods and medications) or some medical procedures such as decompressing the stomach减压, relief of abdominal distention消胀, irrigation of the stomach洗胃.
Urinary and renal tubes 肾、尿导管 – These tubes are inserted through a urethra into a patient’s bladder or through a nephrostomy into the patient’s kidney for drainage or collection of urine.
Respiratory system tubes 呼吸系统导管 – Respiratory system tubes vary with their purposes. For example, endotracheal tube is the placement of a tube into the trachea to maintain a patent airway; a tracheostomy tube is inserted into the opening made surgically directly into the trachea to establish an airway; a chest tube is placed in the pleural space for removal of abnormal accumulations of air and fluids from the pleural space.
Functionally, for the sake of review, tubes relating to nursing may be divided into feeding tubes for administration of medications and nutrients, drainage tubes for drainage of urine or removal of accumulated air/fluids in different organs or tissue spaces, and ventilation tubes for maintenance of an open air or exchange of air. Systematically, tubes may be divided into those relating to the gastrointestinal system, urinary/renal system, and respiratory system. Whatever it is, review of this part may be focused on the devices and techniques for insertion, maintenance, and removal of these tubes, purpose, complications and nursing interventions regarding use of these tubes. These key points will be discussed in three parts:
(1) gastrointestinal tubes;
(2) urinary/renal tubes; and
3) respiratory system tubes.
