Disorders of the respiratory system are common and are encountered by nurses in every setting from the community to the intensive care unit. Expert assessment skills must be developed and used to provide the best care for patients with acute and chronic respiratory problems. In order to differentiate between normal and abnormal assessment findings, an understanding of respiratory function and the significance of abnormal diagnostic test results is essential.
Review of respiratory disorders and medications will focus on infectious diseases, particularly tuberculosis, and respiratory care in relation to oxygen delivery systems and mechanical ventilation. The client with pneumonia, respiratory failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pneumothorax, influenza, and tuberculosis warrant special attention as well as the care of the client, the medication regimen, adequate nutrition and adequate rest, and prevention of progression of the disease. Assisting and teaching the client and family to cope with the social isolation issues that exist during the period of illness is also important.
