Immune Disorders and Medications

The immune system functions as the body’s defense mechanism against invasion and allows a rapid response to foreign substances in a specific manner. Disorders occur to the immune system due to excesses or deficiencies of immunocompetent cells, alterations in the function of these cells, immunologic attack on self-antigens, or inappropriate or exaggerated responses to specific antigens.
For review of this system, main points may therefore focus on the effects of and complications associated with an immune deficiency, nursing care related to the disorder, the impact of treatment or disorder, and client adaptation. Human immunodeficiency virus and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome is a key focus, along with protecting the client from infection and preventing the transmission of infection to other individuals. Psychosocial issues relate to social isolation and the body image disturbances that can occur as a result of the immune disorder.

1. Anatomic and physiologic overview of the immune system
2. Assessment of the immune system
3. Common disorders affecting the immune system
4. Immunologic medications
