    Nurses' Perspectives on Patient Satisfaction and Expectations: An International Cross-Sectional Multicenter Study With Implications for Evidence-Based Practice(pages 185–196)

    A total of 536 nurses participated in the study (response rate 85.3%). Nurses expressed positive attitudes toward activities related to patient satisfaction and expectations, endorsing the importance of talking with patients about their satisfaction status (91.6%) and their expectations (93.2%). These findings warrant further investigation, potentially into the nurses’ work environments or educational programs, to better understand why nurses’ positive attitudes toward patient satisfaction and expectations do not result in actively asking patients about their satisfaction level and what should be done to improve nurses’ performance.

    Exploring Communication Challenges Between Nurses and Mechanically Ventilated Patients in the Intensive Care Unit: A Structured Review (pages 197–206)

    Mechanical ventilation is a necessary procedure for patients with a range of illnesses and conditions. This structured review sought to identify communication challenges which exist between nurses and mechanically ventilated patients in intensive care units (ICU) and hence explore possible solutions to improve these communication challenges.

    What Registered Nurses Do and Do Not in the Management of Pediatric Peripheral Venous Catheters and Guidelines: Unpacking the Outcomes of Computer Reminders (pages 207–215)

    Clinical practical guidelines (CPGs) may enhance evidence-based practice, but require implementation. Computer reminders have previously shown various effects in supporting implementation; in a concomitant study, we found no effect on complications in peripheral venous catheters (PVCs) or registered nurses’ (RNs) adherence to a CPG in pediatric care. Yet, there is a need to determine how reminders operate in particular contexts.
    Effects of Recording Food Intake Using Cell Phone Camera Pictures on Energy Intake and Food Choice (pages 216–223)

    The well-documented increases in obesity and unhealthy dietary practices substantiate the need for evidence-based tools that can help people improve their dietary habits. The current spread of mobile phone–embedded cameras offers new opportunities for recording food intake. Moreover, the act of taking pictures of food consumed may enhance visual consciousness of food choice and quantity. The present study aimed to assess the effect of using cell phone pictures to record food intake on energy intake and food choice in college students. The effectiveness and acceptability of cell phone picture–based diet recording also was assessed.
    The Effectiveness of Neck Stretching Exercises Following Total Thyroidectomy on Reducing Neck Pain and Disability: A Randomized Controlled Trial (pages 224–231)

    Although there are a limited number of studies showing effects of neck stretching exercises following a thyroidectomy in reducing neck discomfort symptoms, no study has specifically dealt with and examined the effect of neck stretching exercises on neck pain and disability. When comparing neck pain and disability scale (NPDS) scores, neck sensitivity and pain with neck movement before thyroidectomy, after 1 week and after 1-month time-points, it was found that patients experienced significantly less pain and disability in the stretching exercise group than the control group (p < .001).

    Educating Family Caregivers for Older Adults About Delirium: A Systematic Review (pages 232–240)

    Delirium in older adults is considered a medical emergency; it contributes to a cascade of functional decline and to increased mortality. Early recognition of delirium symptoms is critical to prevent these negative consequences. Family caregivers who are educated about delirium could partner with nurses and other healthcare professionals in early recognition of delirium symptoms. Before implementing such partnership models, it is important to examine the effectiveness of educating family caregivers about delirium.

    A Guide to Writing a Qualitative Systematic Review Protocol to Enhance Evidence-Based Practice in Nursing and Health Care (pages 241–249)

    The qualitative systematic review is a rapidly developing area of nursing research. In order to present trustworthy, high-quality recommendations, such reviews should be based on a review protocol to minimize bias and enhance transparency and reproducibility. The key elements required in a systematic review protocol are discussed, with a focus on application to qualitative reviews: Development of a research question; formulation of key search terms and strategies; designing a multistage review process; critical appraisal of qualitative literature; development of data extraction techniques; and data synthesis. The paper highlights important considerations during the protocol development process, and uses a previously developed review question as a working example.
