POPULATIONS AT RISK ACROSS THE LIFESPAN
Population Studies
Addressing Pneumococcal Vaccine Uptake Disparities among African-American Adults in the United States (pages 277–282)
Pneumococcal illnesses affect over one million Americans annually, making invasive pneumococcal disease (pneumonia) the most prevalent vaccine-preventable illness. Despite well-documented vaccine safety and efficacy, pneumococcal vaccine (PPSV23) uptake remains low, particularly among minorities. This study sought to define variables predicting PPSV23 uptake in eligible African-American (AA) adults.
Design and Sample
Psychosocial Outcomes of Participating in Pediatric Diabetes Camp (pages 295–302)
There are approximately 18,400 youth who are newly diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) in the United States each year. Because of the potential for hypoglycemia, frequent need to monitor blood glucose, and other medical care associated with T1DM, children may not be able to participate in the typical summer camp experience. The aims of this study were (1) to evaluate the impact of camp on the child's attitude toward their illness, (2) to evaluate the child's confidence in self-care management of their diabetes, (3) to assess the child's perception and satisfaction with the camp experience, and (4) to evaluate the perception of camp experience by the parents.
Public Health Nurses' Activities for Suicide Prevention in Japan (pages 325–334)
Suicide is a major health issue worldwide, including in Japan. Japanese public health nurses (PHNs) play a distinctive role in suicide prevention, although few studies have delineated this role. The purpose of this study was to develop a conceptual framework that elucidates PHNs' activities for suicide prevention.
Education
Using International Videoconferencing to Extend the Global Reach of Community Health Nursing Education (pages 360–370)
Travel abroad provides college students with a unique learning experience. When plans to take undergraduate community health nursing students from the United States to Haiti were cancelled due to health and safety concerns, faculty piloted international videoconferencing with a nursing program in Haiti as an alternative. During this semester-long course, students in both countries assessed a local community using the Community as Partner framework and compared findings during videoconferences with their international peers.
Methods
Experiences of African-American Women with Smartphone-Based Ecological Momentary Assessment (pages 371–380)
Smartphone-based ecological momentary assessment (EMA), or real-time, repeated sampling of participants' states, behaviors, or experiences over time, is a promising approach to understanding obesity-related behaviors in African-American women—a population with the highest obesity prevalence. In this study, we explored participants' experiences with this methodology.
