External scrutiny, faculty research culture and the changing university (pages 2571–2574)
Worldwide, the ground of higher education and indeed the nature of the universities where we work and prepare students, are shifting sands beneath our feet (Darbyshire 2014). The landscape of nursing and midwifery education and the academy that many of us entered, possibly many years ago, is scarcely recognizable in today's globalized university and ‘knowledge economy’ (Girot 2010). The world that may have worked for us in higher education 10 or 20 years ago is unlikely to work for us now or in the future.

    RESEARCH PAPERS
Original Research: Empirical Research – Qualitative
The treatment experiences of people living with ileostomies: an interpretative phenomenological analysis (pages 2662–2671)
Ileostomies, where the small intestine is re-directed out of a stoma in the abdominal wall so waste is collected using a bag, are used to treat conditions including inflammatory bowel disease. Existing research suggests that although life with a stoma can be challenging, ileostomy patients are largely supported by multi-disciplinary teams. However, more research is needed to understand the nuances of these relationships and experiences of treatment, with a view to improving clinical care.
Perceptions about traditional and novel methods to learn about postoperative pain management: a qualitative study (pages 2672–2683)
Patient education is an important part of postoperative care. Contemporary technology offers new ways for patients to learn about self-care, although face-to-face discussions and brochures are the most common methods of delivering education in nursing practice.
Experience of hypertensive patients with self-management of health care (pages 2684–2694)
Hypertension is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases worldwide. The involvement of individuals in the management of their health care to treat this disease is fundamental, with aid and advice from healthcare professionals, especially nurses, so that hypertensive patients can effectively self-manage their health care.
Living with illness and self-transcendence: the lived experience of patients with spinal muscular atrophy (pages 2695–2705)
Existing research studies on spinal muscular atrophy address the physical and psychological effects and complications of the disease; they also provide suggestions for how to improve the current management of this disease. However, information is limited on the disease process and the lived experience of spinal muscular atrophy patients.
Factors influencing decision-making around family presence during resuscitation: a grounded theory study (pages 2706–2717)
Family presence during resuscitation was introduced in the 1980s, so family members/significant others could be with their loved ones during life-threatening events. Evidence demonstrates important benefits; yet despite growing support from the public and endorsement from professional groups, family presence is practiced inconsistently and rationales for poor uptake are unclear.
“You are either out on the court, or sitting on the bench”: understanding accountability from the perspectives of nurses and nursing managers (pages 2718–2727)
    “要么去球场,要么坐板凳”:从护士和护理经验角度理解责任性
Despite the importance attributed to accountability in nursing education and practice, empirical research lacks clarity regarding how nurses perceive accountability and decide whether or not to act accountably.
The quest of pain education leaders in Canada and the United States: a qualitative study (pages 2728–2737)
The assessment and management of acute and chronic pain remains a challenge and the pain education of pre-licensure/undergraduate health professionals (e.g. nurses, physicians, etc.) continues to be suboptimal. Understanding the motivations of pain leaders may provide insights to facilitate the future development of pain clinicians.
The first year: the support needs of parents caring for a child with an intellectual disability (pages 2738–2749)
Parents of children with intellectual disabilities face significant challenges during the first year of their child's life which is an important developmental period not previously addressed in the literature. The provision of support by health professionals, particularly nurses and midwives, during this crucial period can impact on parental well-being and on the health and developmental outcomes of their children. However, parents often feel unsupported.

Original Research: Empirical Research – Quantitative
Patients' assessment of quality of care in public tertiary hospitals with and without accreditation: comparative cross-sectional study (pages 2750–2761)
Healthcare institutions worldwide are increasingly adopting accreditation as continuing initiative aimed at improving structures, processes and outcomes associated with quality of care. Patients being recipients of health care need to participate in assessing the quality of care they experienced while confined for therapeutic management.
Effects of work–family–school role conflicts and role-related social support on burnout in Registered Nurses: a structural equation modelling approach (pages 2762–2772)
Nurses were found to be a high-risk group for burnout, even more so among nurses pursuing an advanced degree. When nurses with a professional career marry and decide to become students, inter-role conflicts and burnout are possible outcomes of the resulting multiple roles.
Symptom trajectory and symptom burden in older people with multimorbidity, secondary outcome from the RCT AGe-FIT study (pages 2773–2783)
Older community-dwelling people with multimorbidity suffer from a high symptom burden with a wide range of co-occurring symptoms often resulting to decreased health-related quality of life. There is a need to move from a single-disease model and address the complexity of older people living with multimorbidity.
Do student nurses experience Imposter Phenomenon? An international comparison of Final Year Undergraduate Nursing Students readiness for registration (pages 2784–2793)

Nurse safety outcomes: old problem, new solution – the differentiating roles of nurses’ psychological capital and managerial support (pages 2794–2805)
The transition shock or Imposter Phenomena sometimes associated with moving from student to Registered Nurse can lead to feelings of self-doubt and insecurity especially with the increased expectations and responsibilities that registration brings.
The relationships between perceived organizational support, affective commitment, psychological contract breach, organizational citizenship behaviour and work engagement (pages 2806–2817)
Nurses play a critical role in delivering exemplary health care. For nurses to perform at their best, they need to experience high engagement, which can be achieved by providing them necessary organizational support and proper working environment.
Performance indicators; the association between the quality of preventive care and the prevalence of hospital-acquired skin lesions in adult hospital patients (pages 2818–2830)
Performance measurements using indicators has become standard practice in recent years. The prevalence of pressure ulcers with or without incontinence dermatitis is widely used as an indicator of the quality of nursing care.

It is important that stroke nurses build their research capability and capacity. This project built on a previous James Lind Alliance prioritization project, which established the shared stroke research priorities of stroke survivors, carers and health professionals.
Primary care nurses' communication and its influence on patient talk during motivational interviewing (pages 2844–2856)
Motivational interviewing is a collaborative conversational style. It has been shown to be effective, in addressing health behaviours such as diet, exercise, weight loss and chronic disease management. In Sweden, it is one of the approaches to disease prevention conversations with patients recommended in the National Guidelines for Disease Prevention. Research on the mechanisms underlying motivational interviewing is growing, but research on motivational interviewing and disease prevention has also been called for.
Knowledge expectations of recently diagnosed patients with knee osteoarthritis(pages 2857–2868)
Patient counselling and information provision are recommended for all patients with knee osteoarthritis. In healthcare centres, there is a good possibility to establish the knowledge expectations of patients with knee osteoarthritis during counselling. Recent empirical evidence indicates a lack of research on knowledge expectations among recently diagnosed patients with knee osteoarthritis.
Health-related quality of life at healing in individuals with chronic venous or mixed-venous leg ulceration: a longitudinal assessment (pages 2869–2878)
Most care focuses primarily on healing; this research may additionally lead to strategies to improve quality of life.
Impact of transformational leadership on nurse work outcomes (pages 2879–2893)
Lack of leadership support is one of the top reasons staff nurses leave. Current studies reported mixed results about the impact of transformational leadership on key nurse outcomes. However, little is known whether leadership directly or indirectly affects satisfaction, organizational commitment and intent to stay.

Original Research: Empirical Research – Mixed Methods
Secondary traumatic stress in the emergency department (pages 2894–2906)
Unexpected death, trauma and violence are regular occurrences that contribute to the stressful environment nurses working in the Emergency department experience. A potential consequence of repeated exposure to such stressors can be referred to as secondary traumatic stress.
Role confusion as a barrier to effective carer involvement for people with intellectual disabilities in acute hospitals: findings from a mixed-method study(pages 2907–2922)
There is evidence that a lack of effective carer involvement can lead to poorer health outcomes for people with intellectual disabilities, but there is a lack of insight into the reasons for poor carer involvement in acute hospitals.

    Research Methodology: Instrument Development
Development and psychometric analysis of the Patient Perceptions of Patient-Empowering Nurse Behaviours Scale (PPPNBS) (pages 2923–2936)
Although patient empowerment has been promoted as a way to engage patients in chronic illness care, there is not a measure reported by patients as recipients of empowering nurse behaviours during hospitalization.
