Helping Patients and Families Understand the Financial Impact of End-of-Life Care

Planning ahead is crucial—nurses can provide information and resources.
In North American culture there is a great divide between advance end-of-life care planning and advance end-of-life financial planning. Although the costs of care can influence care choices, financial information is seldom part of planning for future care. A combination of medical and financial factors, including limited benefits, varying financial circumstances, and uncertain prognoses, result in complex and unpredictable care needs for patients in their final months.

Illinois is not a compact state. One question that has come up is, what should be done about patients who live in Illinois but winter or vacation in another state and call for assistance, advice, or refilling of medications? Are they considered a resident of the state they are visiting or of Illinois

Nurse Fatigue

I applaud the reprinting of “Fatigue as It Affects Nursing” (From the AJN Archives) in conjunction with “Health Care Worker Fatigue” (Safety Monitor) in the August issue. I've been a nurse for 15 years and I know stress and fatigue as if they were blood relatives. I have worked 12-hour double shifts, worked 28 out of 30 days a month for over a year, and gone without lunches for longer than I want to admit because of short staffing.
