Ethical principles, laws, and guidelines related to providing safe and quality care to clients are important for nursing practice. Main points may focus on ethical practices; the nurse practice act; client’s rights, particularly confidentiality and information security, and informed consent; and advocacy, documentation, and advance directives. Knowledgeable use of information technology, such as an electronic health record, is also an important content area.
It is not so difficult to remember the terms or principles regarding ethical and legal issues. What is most important is that you know how to apply these principles in nursing practice, in test-taking in particular. For example, Veracity is one the 6 aspects of nursing ethics. It is easy to know that veracity means to tell the truth. However, when and how should you tell the truth without doing harm to the client or the family? What should you do to let the client accept the truth while cooperating with the HCP actively? These questions are far more than just knowing the meaning of the word veracity.
As we have been doing in the previous tip discussion, our discussion today will focus on the following three aspects:
