Today’s topic is Labor and Birth. The process of labor and birth involves more than the birth of a new born. Numerous physiologic and psychological events occur that ultimately result in the birth of a newborn and the creation or expansion of the family. In this topic, our focus will be on the issues such as the premonitory signs of labor like true and false labor, critical factors affecting labor and birth, maternal and fetal response to the laboring process, obstetric procedures assisting with labor, and the four stages of labor including the critical factors related to each stage of labor: the “5 P’s” of labor. These points will be discussed in three parts: (1) Concepts related to labor and birth; (2) premonitory signs of labor and risk factors; and (3) obstetrical procedures and nursing care
