Chapter 47
Musculoskeletal Disorders
肌肉骨骼系统疾病
Unlike many other disorders in children, disorders of the musculoskeletal system usually manifest with specific, localized symptoms so parents usually find them somewhat easily and bring children to health care facilities early in the course of such illness, though some may manifest insidiously. Besides, the way that parents and children react to the diagnosis of a musculoskeletal disorder can be culturally influenced. Because an adolescent culture is often one that respects athletics, beauty, and conformity, it can be a very difficult time for an adolescent to maintain body image and self-esteem when a musculoskeletal disorder is present, which the nurse need take into account when planning care.
Children are in the stage of rapid growth, therefore, injuries may heal much more quickly in children than in adults. However, an injury that might be simple in an adult may become serious in a child since they may lead to problems with locomotion and possibly limitations of activity and threaten a child’s ability to develop optimally in other ways. Any self-limiting problem of locomotion can become serious impairment during childhood.
As usual, our discussion of this chapter will be conducted in three aspects:
1. Assessment of musculoskeletal disorders,
2. Therapeutic management of musculoskeletal disorders in general, and
3. Common musculoskeletal disorders.
