Integumentary disorders occur often in children because of exposure to infectious microorganisms, hypersensitivity reactions, hormonal influences, and injuries. Some integumentary disorders are as mild and self-limited as a minor abrasion. Others, such as atopic dermatitis, are chronic and must be managed consistently. Still, some integumentary disorders can be severe and even life-threatening, such as full-thickness burns. Nurses, as well as the test-takers, need to be familiar with common skin disorders of infancy, childhood, and adolescence. Review of integumentary disorders may be focused on the assessment and medical-surgical management of each disorder. Understanding the cause of each disorder helps us know how to assess and manage each disorder.
